Hymenophyllum nephrophyllum

Kidney Fern

New Zealand Status: Endemic
Conservation Status: Unknown

Hymenophyllum nephrophyllum, also known as Kidney fern or Raurenga, are filmy ferns that are endemic to New Zealand. The distinctive, translucent, kidney-shaped ferns stand about 50mm to 100mm tall and grow on the forest floor in open native bush. In hot weather they shrivel up to conserve moisture then open again when sufficient moisture returns. This species has very thin fronds which are only four to six cells in thickness.

Previously known as Trichomanes reniforme and Cardiomanes reniforme both of which are now considered to be synonyms.
