Hangehange (NZ Privet)
New Zealand Status: Endemic
Conservation Status: Not Threatened
Geniostoma ligustrifolium, also known as Hangehange, NZ Privet or Maori Privet, is a bushy shrub that grows to about 3 metres tall. It is found growing as an under-shrub in many coastal and lowland forests throughout North Island and Northern parts of South Island.
The name has recently changed from Geniostoma rupestre var. ligustrifolium.
It has opposite leaves, with pale green underside, 5-7cm long and 2-3cm wide. In the spring it produces tiny greenish, slightly hairy, heavily perfumed, flowers.
